The story follows Miles Logan (Lawrence), a jewel thief who hides a massive diamond in a building under construction just before being arrested. Upon his release two years later, he discovers that the "under construction" building is now a high-security LAPD precinct. To retrieve his loot, Logan poses as a transfer detective. Ironically, his "criminal instincts" make him an incredibly effective cop, leading to a series of hilarious misunderstandings as he tries to navigate his new partner, Detective Carlson (played by Luke Wilson), and get his diamond back.
