After some research and exploration, I decided to take the plunge and install a custom ROM on my device. I'm glad to report that the process was relatively smooth, and I'm now running a newer version of Android on my trusty tablet.

The SM-T280 has a 4000mAh battery. On custom ROM, I charge it once every two days with light use (reading, music, email). On stock, it needed daily charging. The Spreadtrum chipset runs cooler on Nougat because background processes are optimized.
