Harbinger Down is a 2015 American science-fiction horror film directed by Alec Gillis, a veteran practical effects artist (known for Aliens , Tremors , and The Thing prequel). The film was crowdfunded after Gillis and his team at Studio ADI were disappointed that their extensive practical creature effects were almost entirely replaced by CGI in the 2011 film The Thing . Determined to showcase what practical effects could achieve, they created Harbinger Down as a love letter to classic creature features like The Thing (1982) and Alien .
The backstory of Harbinger Down is as famous as the movie itself. After the practical effects created by for the 2011 prequel to The Thing were largely replaced by digital overlays in post-production, founders Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. decided to take matters into their own hands.
