Elmalılı Muhammed Hamdi Yazır (1878–1942) was a towering Ottoman-Turkish scholar, jurist, logician, philosopher, and linguist. He served as a deputy in the Ottoman Parliament and later in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. In 1925, at the request of the newly established Turkish Republic’s Ministry of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), he was commissioned to produce a comprehensive Quranic commentary ( tafsir ) and translation into Turkish.
