“Nia Bleu, Miss Raquel” is more than a whimsical combination of words. The African Nia foregrounds purpose; the French Bleu colors that purpose with a hue laden with artistic and colonial histories; the English Miss frames the subject within gendered expectations of respectability; the Spanish Raquel grounds her in a lineage of biblical and contemporary feminine power.
