Though Hayao Miyazaki is a master of hope, the manga (and to a lesser extent, the film) depicts a world of the Sea of Decay . The Ohmu and the poisonous jungle are classic Kegare . The world is literally dying, and the "clean" humans are the ones causing the pollution.
